Statement of the General Assembly of Judges

Statement of the General Assembly of Judges

The General Assembly of Judges has recorded that the inactivity of the Judicial Council does not reflect the collective will of the judges and that this body practically fails to guarantee the independence of judges. This was announced by the General Assembly of Judges after nearly 6 hours of discussions.

The text of the statement was read by the President of the Supreme Court, Ervand Khundkaryan.

Accordingly, the General Assembly of Judges has emphasized the necessity for reforms in the judicial system. However, these reforms should have a clear and well-founded rationale. The effectiveness of judicial reforms can only be ensured through lawful means and constructive dialogue among all branches of power.

The General Assembly of Judges stated that no judge in the Republic of Armenia opposes the idea that, from the perspective of strengthening public trust, representatives of society should receive information about the property status of judges. However, this should be carried out according to a clear rationale.

Additionally, the General Assembly of Judges has strongly condemned any disrespectful actions against judges. They called for an abstention from statements that undermine the authority of the judicial power and tarnish the honor and dignity of judges, as well as any actions that disrupt the normal functioning of the courts.

It is worth noting that the extraordinary meeting was convened by the order of Ervand Khundkaryan, the President of the Supreme Court of Armenia.
