LIVE: The First Session of the Newly Elected Parliament
The first session of the newly elected National Assembly of Armenia is underway. The parliament has convened its inaugural meeting. The agenda includes 7 items.
Today, the parliament will form a counting commission, followed by the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly and Deputy Speakers.
The establishment of permanent committees of the National Assembly is the 4th item on the agenda; thereafter, the chairs of those committees will be elected.
Also included in the agenda are the draft law on "Amendments to the Structure of the Government" as well as the question of approving the Government's program.
According to the parliamentary regulations, the meeting is presided over by the oldest member until the Speaker is elected; in this case, it is Knyaz Hasanov from the "My Step" faction.
The parliamentary regulations also stipulate that the elections of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers are conducted by secret ballot.
It is noteworthy that according to preliminary statements, the "My Step" faction intends to nominate Ararat Mirzoyan for the position of Speaker, with Lena Nazaryan and Alen Simonian as candidates for the Deputy Speakers' roles. The 3rd Deputy Speaker is to be from the opposition fraction. The two opposition factions, "Prosperous Armenia" and "Bright Armenia," have nominated candidates Vahe Enfiajyan and Mane Tandilyan, respectively.
