The U.S. Embassy in Armenia Issues Important Statement
The U.S. Embassy in Armenia welcomes the ongoing progress of Armenian-American civil nuclear cooperation. Between May 19 and 22, experts from the 'Sargent and Lundy' company were in Armenia to provide continuous technical advice on small modular reactor technology as part of the U.S. State Department’s 'Fundamental Infrastructures for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology' program.
Working alongside Armenian officials, 'Sargent and Lundy' has completed a preliminary technical and economic assessment regarding the feasibility of replacing the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) with new advanced American small modular reactor technologies.
Main observations include:
- Four of the most suitable American small modular reactor technologies have been identified for deployment in Armenia.
- Technical support has been harmonized with best practices from the IAEA, focusing on the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.
- Options for establishing replacement capabilities after the decommissioning of the ANPP have been considered.
