Ovchershchuk Warns Armenia: Moscow Will Not Support a Country Approaching Unfriendly Forces
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Ovchershchuk spoke to the TASS news agency regarding Armenia's choice between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU). He noted that this issue is quite complex, as economic and political factors are closely intertwined, which is reflected in the ongoing pre-electoral campaign in the country.
According to Ovchershchuk, Moscow is interested in maintaining Armenia's membership in the EAEU, so the country does not miss its current economic advantages. He emphasized that during the 11 years of membership in the union, Armenia has recorded growth in GDP and living standards.
At the same time, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister pointed out Yerevan's aspirations towards the EU, referencing the law adopted last April, and urged the Armenian side to clarify its position quickly, as the existing uncertainty hinders the establishment of long-term economic relations.
He also stated that Moscow wants to see Armenia within the EAEU, but Yerevan needs to specify its stance. He added that under the circumstances of EU militarization, Yerevan should assess the consequences of its actions since it is unacceptable for Russia to support a country that is approaching unfriendly structures at the expense of its own budget.
Regarding regional peace, Ovchershchuk mentioned that under Moscow's efforts, a process has begun for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and a partial unblocking of transportation routes. The issue of Armenia's status will be discussed at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting scheduled for May 29 in Astana.
