Only Armenian Citizens Decide: EU Ambassador
The partnership between the Republic of Armenia and the European Union has reached an unprecedented level. In an interview with Armenpress, the EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vasilis Maraghos, stated this.
He noted that this cooperation is based on a shared vision for the future, shared values, and respect for Armenia's sovereign choice. The ambassador also addressed the importance of the European Political Community and Armenia-EU summit meetings scheduled for May 4 and 5 in Yerevan, as well as the regional peace.
Speaking about the parliamentary elections expected in June, Vasilis Maraghos delivered his message to the citizens: 'The parliamentary elections in June are an important milestone, and my message to the citizens of Armenia is clear: these elections are yours. The right to determine the future of Armenia belongs to the voters – freely and without interference, while the role of the European Union is to support, based on the requests of the Armenian authorities, ensuring that this process is fully secured.'
The ambassador explained that the EU supports institutions that ensure free and fair elections, such as the Central Electoral Commission, civil society, and independent media. He emphasized that this is a civil mission, which is neither an observation group nor a participant in the process. According to the ambassador, the purpose of the support is to defend Armenia’s sovereignty, so that on June 7, the future of the country is determined exclusively by its citizens.
Vasilis Maraghos added that the European Union does not choose winners and does not associate with any political force or candidate. 'We will work with the government that is formed as a result of the choices of the people of Armenia, guided by the same principles and the same agenda,' the ambassador stated, urging citizens to exercise their rights and not to believe misinformation.
