EU Member States Have Incurred Additional Costs of €27 Billion Due to Iran, Says Ursula von der Leyen
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced in the European Parliament that, during the ongoing conflict in Iran, EU member states have been forced to incur additional costs of more than €27 billion for importing fossil fuels over the past 60 days. According to the official, this substantial amount has been paid without any increase in the volumes of energy consumption.
In her speech, von der Leyen specifically emphasized that such a rise in expenditures is solely attributable to market fluctuations and the increasing prices of energy carriers, which arose from regional instability. She noted that the current situation is a heavy burden on the European economy, as the additional billions do not imply a real increase in energy resources.
According to the head of the European Commission, the negative repercussions of the situation in Iran may have long-term effects. She stated that the existing tension in the energy market and the resulting economic difficulties may be felt in the coming months or even years.
