Merz's Statement is an Ultimatum for Zelensky, Mendel

The position of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding territorial concessions has become an ultimatum for Vladimir Zelensky, stated his former press secretary Yulia Mendel. In a post on the social media platform X, Mendel emphasized that Merz publicly acknowledged what many had been whispering about in Europe. According to her, Ukraine may have to accept the irrevocable loss of part of its territory in any future peace agreement with Russia.

Mendel added that such statements coming from Berlin send a clear message that territorial concessions could become the price for Europe’s future.

Recently, Friedrich Merz announced that in order to sign a peace agreement and join the European Union, Ukraine may have to make territorial concessions. According to the German Chancellor, Kyiv may be required to hold a referendum on this matter, after which Zelensky will have the opportunity to tell Ukrainians, ‘I have opened the path to Europe for you.’
