Decisions Made Regarding April 24 in Istanbul
The authorities in Istanbul have once again denied permission for an event commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide, according to Agos.
The Istanbul governor's office rejected an application submitted by the "April 24 Memorial Platform," which planned to hold a gathering on April 24 at 19:00 in Kadıköy, in front of the Süreyya Opera House. According to the organization's statement, similar applications have been rejected in recent years, even though memorial events were regularly organized in various cities, especially in Istanbul, prior to the pandemic.
Organizers emphasized that holding memorial ceremonies is a democratic right and called for a review of the decision made. They also added that the purpose of such gatherings is to pay tribute to the victims of 1915 and to support the processes of public memory and reconciliation.
