Zelensky Discusses Nuclear Weapons
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the signing of the Budapest Memorandum in 1994 and the decision to relinquish nuclear weapons was a mistake. In an interview with The Rest Is Politics, he mentioned that the country did not receive any security guarantees in return.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine should have at least received NATO membership or an equivalent security framework. He asserted that those countries that supported this decision should have provided clear defense mechanisms, but according to him, this did not happen.
He also noted that he discussed this topic with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky pointed out that after the occupation of Crimea and parts of Donbas by Russia, Ukraine turned to the countries that guaranteed its security, but did not receive the expected support.
