US Intelligence on the Final Peace Agreement Between Yerevan and Baku
The US intelligence community has noted that there are still obstacles in the way of a final peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to a report published today assessing threats, the organization cited Azerbaijan’s demand to amend Armenia's constitution.
“President Aliyev continues to assert that Armenia must change its constitution to remove the reference that, according to him, implies that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Armenia. This would require a constitutional referendum in Armenia, the outcome of which is not guaranteed,” the US intelligence agency stated.
Meanwhile, the annual report highlighted that the Peace Summit held in August under Washington’s auspices at the White House has created an opportunity for Armenia and Azerbaijan to reach a long-term peace agreement and contribute to increased regional stability.
The intelligence agency specifically pointed out that the US side has successfully reached preliminary agreement on the terms of the peace treaty, and the TRIPP project has been confirmed, which “will be managed by the US and will connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave via a route passing through southern Armenia, opening trade flows for both countries and the entire region.”
