Germany Responds to Trump's Calls
Berlin has reacted to US President Donald Trump’s calls to support free navigation in the Hormuz Strait, stating that "this war has nothing to do with NATO. This is not a NATO war." The comments from Chancellor Friedrich Merz's representative came after Trump hinted at threats towards NATO, declaring that the alliance could face a "very bad future."
The German government has also reiterated that it will not participate in any operations in the Hormuz Strait. "Participation was not considered prior to this war and is not being considered now," added the government spokesperson.
Upon arriving in Brussels this morning, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul informed journalists that he does not see any role for NATO countries in the Hormuz Strait. Merz has been hardening his stance against Iran amid the ongoing war, which shows no signs of cessation. Last week, he criticized the US for easing sanctions against Russia and openly stated that he does not understand what plans the US has for ending the war.
The German government representative informed reporters that "before the war, both the US and Israel clearly indicated that European assistance was neither necessary nor desired."
