The Most Important Thing is That We Do Not Become Prisoners of Historical Memory: President
During his state visit to Greece, President of the Republic of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan gave an interview to the prestigious 'Manifesto' magazine. The president discussed Armenia's foreign policy priorities, regional developments, and the ongoing steps in the peace process with Azerbaijan.
Touching on the Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations, Vahagn Khachaturyan recalled the joint statement signed on August 8, 2025, in Washington, which was signed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the presence of then U.S. President Donald Trump. 'What happened on August 8 could have seemed unbelievable. However, it did not happen in one day. It was preceded by a rather long preparatory phase,' the president noted.
According to Khachaturyan, the negotiation process has yielded practical results in terms of the situation along the borders. He reported that since January 25 of last year, the situation along the borders has been calm, with no reports of gunfire, whereas previously border incidents occurred almost daily.
The president also addressed concerns from certain circles in the diaspora regarding the normalization of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. He said that during meetings with Armenian communities abroad, he felt an understanding of the government's policies. 'I presented the economic and political situation in Armenia. I sensed that there is understanding regarding our government's actions. The most important thing is that we do not become prisoners of historical memory and do not disconnect from reality,' the president emphasized.
In the interview, Vahagn Khachaturyan also outlined the current state of Armenian-Greek relations and the prospects for their development, emphasizing the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation.
