New Project Gives Some Students the Opportunity to Be Exempt from Military Service

Citizens accepted to the world's top 50 universities and granted a deferment from military service can be exempt from compulsory military service after completing their studies, by working in a field established by the government in Armenia. This was announced by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan during the second reading of a draft law on amendments and additions to the "Military Service and Military Servant Status" law, which was presented at the session of the National Assembly's committee on science, education, and culture.

"The draft is about providing our citizens, who receive deferment and organize their education at reputable universities abroad, the opportunity to return and work in their respective field for at least 3 years according to the regulations set by the Government after completing their educational degree, after which they can essentially be exempt from military service," said Andreasyan.

No substantive changes were made to the draft during the transition from the first to the second reading. The committee has given a positive conclusion to the draft, and it will be discussed in the National Assembly's plenary session for the second reading.
