Satellite Images Indicate Acceleration of China’s Nuclear Program

New satellite images published by the New York Times show a sharp acceleration in China's nuclear program. One notable site is located in the Zitong Valley of Sichuan Province, where bunkers and new earthen embankments have been constructed in recent years. Experts believe that the new complex, filled with pipelines, indicates work with highly hazardous materials.

The images from 2024 and 2026 reveal active construction sites and highly secured facilities, including earthen bunkers and fences. Another valley houses a highly protected site known as Pingtong, where experts assess that China is producing plutonium nuclear cores for nuclear warheads.

The main building reaches approximately 110 meters in height and features extremely large ventilation ducts. In recent years, the building has been renovated, with additional ventilation openings and heat dissipation devices added. Construction work continues nearby.
