Our Constitution Does Not Obstruct Signing a Peace Treaty, Papoyan

The Constitution of Armenia does not obstruct signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, and the Armenian side is ready to sign it as early as tomorrow. This was stated by Gevorg Papoyan during a press conference while responding to a journalist's question regarding Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s commentary in an interview with France 24, where he claimed that a peace treaty would not be signed until Armenia's Constitution is 'revised.'

'There is nothing new here in the sense that we believe our Constitution is not an obstacle to signing a peace treaty, and we are ready to sign the peace treaty even tomorrow. There is no new information in our statements, our approach, or our position, and we continue to affirm that we can sign the peace treaty even in this condition, as our Constitutional Court has provided a clear assessment that it does not contradict,' emphasized Papoyan.

According to the Minister, Armenia's position remains unchanged, and the negotiation process continues. 'We see that there is a process, and it is progressing quite well. It is also a fact that peace has been established, another fact is that soldiers are no longer dying at the border, and it is also a fact that major infrastructure and investment projects are being implemented in the Republic of Armenia, primarily with American investments, which I believe are the greatest guarantee for lasting peace in the region and for Armenia's economic development,' stated Papoyan.

It is noteworthy that earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated in an interview with France 24 that the formulations in the Armenian Constitution regarding Nagorno-Karabakh remain a 'red line' for Azerbaijan. According to him, without this amendment, the signing of a peace agreement will not take place.
