European Parliament Calls on Azerbaijan to Release Armenian Prisoners
Members of the European Parliament have issued a joint statement regarding the Armenians detained in Azerbaijan. They condemned the decisions made by the military court in Baku regarding 15 out of 19 Armenian detainees.
The document notes that significant steps have been taken towards peace and reconciliation between Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2025; the Washington Declaration was signed, the text of a peace agreement was preliminary signed, and, for the first time in decades, cargo has been sent from Azerbaijan to Armenia.
The members also reminded that Baku had released 4 Armenians held in Azerbaijan. “In light of these developments, we call on the authorities of Azerbaijan to continue this positive dynamic and release all Armenian detainees,” the statement reads.
The members expressed confidence that their release would represent an important manifestation of goodwill and another significant step towards establishing long-term peace in the South Caucasus.
