Turkey Will Not Join the EU as Long as Brussels Pursues This Policy: Fidan
During negotiations in Ankara with EU enlargement commissioner Marta Kos, Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the need to overcome existing obstacles in bilateral relations and called for the establishment of a broader, institutionalized, and multidimensional cooperation framework between Turkey and the EU.
Fidan previously stated that Turkey's accession to the European Union is impossible as long as Brussels adheres to its current policy towards Ankara. However, according to Politico, the EU is not currently considering the resumption of membership negotiations, despite the visit of the EU commissioner to Turkey.
Ankara has been a candidate for EU membership since 1999 and has been conducting accession negotiations since 2005.
“The obstacles in bilateral relations must be overcome through a broader, institutionalized, and multidimensional cooperation framework,” the joint statement said following the negotiations today.
