NATO Begins Planning for Greenland Security

NATO has initiated military planning for the "Arctic Guardian" mission aimed at ensuring Greenland's security. This was announced by the spokesperson for the NATO Allied Forces Central Europe Headquarters (SHAPE), Colonel Martin O'Donnell, according to AFP. He declined to disclose further details as preparations for the mission are still in their early stages.

According to Bloomberg, Germany is spearheading the "Arctic Guardian" mission. Sources from the agency have stated that NATO may use the "Baltic Guardian" mission, launched in January 2025 to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, as a model.

On January 16, the UK's Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, stated in an interview with The Daily Mirror that the UK supports the establishment of the "Arctic Guardian" mission. She noted that the UK does not share the US stance on Greenland and respects the island's sovereignty as part of Denmark.
