Important Decision Made: Nuclear Power Plant Type Must Be Modular, Says David Khudatyan
The Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan announced during a press conference what type of nuclear power plant should be established. “In 2026, we will make an important decision regarding the type of nuclear power plant. We have decided that the type should be modular,” the minister stated.
“We will continue to study the proposals given to us in this regard, particularly from the Russian Federation, the United States, China, Korea, and France. We do not have a final decision regarding the selection of the model; this issue will be addressed in 2026 or 2027, so there is no need to rush,” he noted.
According to him, depending on the choice of model, it will be determined which countries we will cooperate with. “Since the modular nuclear power plant system has not been widely used in the past, there is a need for additional research, which we are currently conducting. We are confident that the plan to extend the operational term of the Armenian NPP by another 10 years will be successful, and it will continue to remain connected to the Armenian energy system,” said Khudatyan.
He clarified that the authorities are consistently taking steps to extend the operational period of the nuclear power plant until 2036. “The work within the framework of this project is being carried out according to the established timeline,” added Khudatyan.
