China Executes Four Members of Myanmar's Mafia
China has executed four members of the Bai family mafia, one of the most notorious dynasties running fraud centers in Myanmar, state media report.
They were among 21 family members and associates convicted by a court in Guangdong province for fraud, murder, assault, and other crimes. Last November, the court sentenced five of them to death, including family patriarch Bai Suocheng, who died from illness after being sentenced, according to state media.
Last week, China executed 11 members of the Ming family mafia in a crackdown on fraud in Southeast Asia.
For years, the Bais, Mings, and several other families dominated the border town of Laukkai in Myanmar, where they operated casinos, red-light districts, and cybercrime operations. The Bais, who maintained their own paramilitary force, established 41 complexes to house cybercrime activities and casinos, authorities reported. Within the walls of those complexes, a culture of violence prevailed, where beatings and torture were commonplace.
The court noted that the criminal activities of the Bai family resulted in the deaths of six Chinese citizens, one suicide, and numerous injuries.
