European Commission Launches Investigation into Elon Musk's X Company
The European Commission has initiated an investigation into Elon Musk's X company over concerns that its artificial intelligence tool, Grok, has been used to create sexualized images of real people. Previously, the UK's regulatory body, Ofcom, had announced an investigation into Grok.
If X is found guilty of violating the European Digital Services Act, the company could face fines of up to 6% of its global revenue.
Rejeana Doherty, a Member of the European Parliament representing Ireland, mentioned that the Commission will assess whether EU users have been presented with 'manipulated images of a sexual nature.'
In a previous statement published on the X Safety page, the platform stated that it has prohibited Grok from digitally manipulating nude photographs of people 'in jurisdictions where such content is illegal.' However, activists and victims have pointed out that the possibility of creating sexualized images with this tool 'should never have been allowed,' and Ofcom has indicated that the investigation will continue.
The European regulatory body announced that it may 'apply temporary measures' if X refuses to make necessary changes. It also stated that it has expanded its investigation, which began in December 2023, concerning risks related to X's recommendation systems, which suggest certain posts to users.
