Greenland Refuses to Share Its Resources with the United States
The Minister of Mineral Resources of Greenland, Naaja Nathanielsen, has rejected U.S. participation in the distribution of the island's natural resources. She emphasized that no external power should determine the fate of Arctic resource management.
In an interview with Politico, Nathanielsen highlighted that Greenland has "no intention of agreeing to have the future development of the mining sector decided from outside Greenland." She pointed out that the island possesses significant mineral reserves. According to her, the reserves of rare earth elements could cover approximately one quarter of global demand.
Greenland also contains large reserves of oil, gas, gold, and metals essential for clean energy. However, industrial mining activity remains limited.
U.S. President Donald Trump had stated that he reached a "framework agreement regarding future contracts" with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte concerning Greenland. The details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Nathanielsen asserted that if such an agreement implies control over Greenland's mineral resources by any other country apart from Greenland, the answer would be negative.
