Denmark Discusses Transfer of Limited Areas of Greenland to the U.S.

Denmark may grant the United States sovereignty over limited areas of Greenland for the construction of American military bases without transferring the entire island to Washington, informed sources have told The New York Times and The Telegraph.

According to the sources, this option was discussed and received preliminary approval during a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Sources note that if an agreement is reached, the U.S. would be able to build additional military facilities in Greenland for operational, intelligence, and training purposes. These measures are viewed as part of a strategy to strengthen the U.S. presence in the Arctic and counter Russia and China.
