European Leaders Warn Trump's Tariff Threats on Greenland Could Strain US Relations

Leaders from eight European countries have declared that the tariff threats aimed at Greenland by US President Donald Trump could lead to a dangerous escalation in transatlantic relations.

“We are ready for dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which we firmly support. The threats of tariffs undermine transatlantic cooperation and pose a risk of dangerous escalation,” the leaders of Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden stated in their announcement.

Earlier, Trump had announced that a 10% tariff on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would come into effect on February 1, with a potential increase to 25%. He indicated that the import tariffs would remain in place “until a complete and full agreement is reached regarding the purchase of Greenland by the United States.”
