EU to Discuss New Sanctions Against Iran
European Union foreign ministers will discuss a new package of sanctions against Iran during a meeting scheduled for January 29 in Brussels. This was reported by the European publication Politico, citing two European diplomats.
According to them, the proposed list includes 21 points related to the EU sanctions regime for human rights violations. Additionally, the European External Action Service is suggesting to add 10 points related to the production of unmanned aerial vehicles to the sanctions list.
Politico clarifies that Germany, France, and the Netherlands are the most active in pushing for stricter restrictions against Tehran. However, as reported by Euractiv, the EU does not intend to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—the elite unit of Iran's armed forces—as a terrorist organization, due to resistance from Rome, Paris, and Madrid.
Previously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU does not rule out further tightening of sanctions against Iran.
