When the Death Penalty Ruling for South Korea's Former President Will Be Announced
The Seoul Central District Court will announce its ruling on February 19 in the case of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency, noting that a special prosecutor's team has requested the death penalty for the former president.
During the final session of the trial, an assistant to the special prosecutor stated that Yoon Suk-yeol had attempted to impose martial law with the aim of maintaining power for the long term, trying to establish control over the judiciary and legislative authorities. According to the indictment, the severity of the crime is also compounded by the use of state resources, which should have been used solely for public interests.
Yoon Suk-yeol is also involved in other criminal cases, including charges of leading a rebellion. In addition, he faces accusations of abuse of power and an alleged incident involving sending drones to North Korea.
It is noteworthy that the political crisis in South Korea began in December 2024 when Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of martial law, but it was not approved by the parliament. As a result, he faced impeachment, which was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in April 2025.
