Trump Not Impressed by Denmark's NATO Termination Threats, Pushkov Says
Aleskey Pushkov, a member of the Federation Council's constitutional commission of the Russian Federation, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump is unimpressed by Denmark’s threats regarding the 'end' of NATO in relation to a potential acquisition of Greenland.
Pushkov noted on January 6 that everything regarding Greenland depends exclusively on Trump’s decisiveness, rather than on Denmark. He believes that should the island join the U.S., a crisis in NATO may emerge, but it would be short-lived. According to him, it is unlikely that even the Kingdom of Denmark itself would exit the alliance.
“Denmark and its European allies are trying to play their last card, implying that the acquisition of Greenland could lead to 'the end of NATO,' but foremost, this threat does not impress Trump. He likely correctly believes that the European allies are simply bluffing, and after the crisis around Greenland, everything will revert to the status quo,” Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel.
He added that Trump remains skeptical about NATO. In his assessment, this tool is primarily necessary for Europeans to secure their safety at the expense of the U.S. Pushkov noted that Trump rarely discusses NATO's importance for the U.S.
