South Korean Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Former President
South Korean prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for former president Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of inciting rebellion. The latest court session took place on Tuesday, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
Yoon Suk-yeol is accused of conspiracy with former defense ministers and others to instigate disorder with the intent of undermining the Constitution by unlawfully declaring martial law in the absence of war or equivalent state of emergency. Specifically, he is charged with mobilizing troops and police to surround the National Assembly building and obstructing votes against his decree to declare martial law, as well as issuing orders for the arrest and detention of the National Assembly Speaker and the leaders of both the ruling and major opposition parties at that time.
