The South Caucasus Could Become a Major Transportation Hub, NATO

NATO welcomes the recent steps in the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and supports all constructive actions taken by them with the aim of reaching a peace agreement, stated Alexander Vinnikov, head of NATO’s office in the South Caucasus.

According to him, the South Caucasus has the potential to become a major transportation hub; however, its realization requires the development of modern infrastructure and the establishment of true intermodality, which would allow for the efficient transport of goods across various stages, through different countries, and under diverse geographical conditions.

Alexander Vinnikov noted that the agreement reached on August 8 in Washington and the subsequent developments, including the creation of a regional connectivity network primarily involving Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey, as well as linking Central Asia more broadly to Europe, clearly demonstrate these opportunities. He emphasized that regardless of the names given to independent initiatives, it is important that they genuinely serve the interests of the countries in the region, create conditions for the full utilization of economic and transit potential, and contribute to the construction of peace and long-term stability.

He pointed out that these principles form the basis of the TRIPP initiative and could open significant economic opportunities for the entire South Caucasus region.
