President Ahmad al-Sharaan Introduces New National Currency for Syria
President Ahmad al-Sharaan officially introduced a new national currency for Syria. The images of the Assad family have been removed from the new banknotes. The colors of the new Syrian banknotes are quite vibrant, featuring various images of cotton, mulberries, olives, wheat ears, and roses.
President al-Sharaan announced that this change marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new phase for Syria, emphasizing that the removal of zeros from the old currency simplifies transactions but does not, in itself, improve the economy. He stressed that economic growth depends on increases in production, reduction of unemployment, and a stable banking sector.
President al-Sharaan called for calm during the transitional period, assuring citizens that old banknotes will be gradually exchanged according to a timeline. The new banknotes, which reflect Syria's heritage, are designed to facilitate trade, reduce dependence on the dollar, and restore confidence in the Syrian pound.
