Trump: Putin Wants This to Happen, He Made It Very Clear and I Believe Him
Following three hours of negotiations in Florida, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have announced that significant progress has been made towards achieving peace with Russia. This is reported by The New York Times.
The main issue remains unresolved: Putin demands control of Donbas, Zelensky opposes this, while Trump insists on the swift signing of an agreement. It is noted that the parameters of the peace treaty would be much simpler.
Russia considers the question of Donbas's territorial ownership a top priority. Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged the U.S. president to adhere to the 'understandings' reached between them in Anchorage, although no substantial agreements were announced then. His aide, Yuri Ushakov, has highlighted Russia's primary demand: Kyiv must make a 'bold, responsible political decision regarding Donbas.'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that this issue should be resolved by the people of Ukraine.
Trump has not ruled out the possibility of unforeseen issues arising. He said that any point in the peace plan 'can be very important' and could undermine the entire agreement.
According to the White House leader, a trilateral meeting between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia is quite likely to take place in the near future: 'Putin wants this to happen. He made it very clear to me, and I believe him.'
