2025 Winter is the Driest on Record: Two Dangerous Phenomena Observed in 2025 – Azizyan

The average temperature in Armenia from January to November 2025 was 8.1 degrees Celsius, nearly one degree above the norm. Levon Azizyan, director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, stated this during a press conference today.

“The amount of precipitation during the same period was 422 millimeters, which is 81% of the norm. Notably, March and November 2025 were particularly warm, with average monthly temperatures exceeding the norms by 2.9 and 3.1 degrees respectively.

March 2025 was the sixth warmest March since 1935 based on observational data. On certain days, new temperature records were observed. Specifically, on March 17, the maximum temperature in Kapand reached 31.3°C, exceeding the highest temperature previously recorded.

Significantly high temperatures were noted on August 2 and 5, with maximum daily temperatures in Yerevan reaching 41.9 and 41.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, surpassing the highest temperatures ever recorded for those days, while Areni recorded 42.6 degrees on the same day.

Additionally, a considerable rise in air temperatures was observed from October 7 to 9, where daily average temperatures in various regions of the Republic were 5-7 degrees higher. In the Ararat Plain and Yerevan, maximum temperatures reached between 30 to 32 degrees, while Meghri recorded 34.5 degrees, which were also unprecedented,” Azizyan noted.

According to him, the winter of 2025 was the driest since 1935. “The average amount of precipitation during the winter months in Armenia is 55.7 mm, which is 49% of the norm. I would like to highlight two dangerous phenomena observed in 2025. The first occurred in Artashat on May 5, when in three hours and ten minutes, precipitation amounted to one and a half times the norm, causing significant damage to the economy. The other hazardous hydro-meteorological event took place on June 15, when a strong whirlwind was observed in Aparan, with wind speeds reaching up to 39 meters per second, also causing considerable damage to the economy,” he added.
