Mount Etna in Sicily Erupts Lava Up to 400 Meters High
Mount Etna in Sicily has erupted lava reaching heights of up to 400 meters, creating a plume of smoke and ash, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy.
“After several hours of relative calm, a new lava flow began in the northeastern crater. The activity quickly intensified, producing lava jets of 300-400 meters in height and a column of pyroclastic material that rose several kilometers above the summit of Etna before being blown westward by the wind,” the statement noted.
“Images from surveillance cameras at dusk showed strong and continuous eruptions corresponding to the northeastern crater,” the institute's latest report stated.
Etna's activity has not disrupted operations at the nearby airport in Catania.
