Air Quality Issues in Yerevan Discussed Since the 1980s: Avinyan

In our pre-election program, the first point we wrote regarding air quality was that we would install air quality measuring devices in all administrative districts of Yerevan. This was stated by Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan during the Public Television broadcast.

“Currently, at the request of the Yerevan Municipality, developers have around 180 devices installed, which cover the entire city. We have started to get a detailed view of what is happening in the city. The issue of air quality in Yerevan was discussed as far back as the 1980s,” said Avinyan.

According to the mayor, the air quality issue is very seasonal and is mainly influenced by the city's geographical position, noting that all cities located in the Ararat Valley face similar problems from November to March. He also mentioned that, for example, today's air quality has improved because “the northern wind has somewhat cleaned it up.”

“At this moment, if I am not mistaken, the air quality is at a good level, but there are as many cars, the same number of mines, and construction operates in the same way and volume. 80% of the factors are determined by geographical location and climatic conditions,” the mayor stated.

Discussing the solution to the problem, he noted specifically: “It is actually a complex issue that requires complicated solutions. The main solutions involve creating large-volume evergreen green barriers outside the city of Yerevan, reaching hundreds or perhaps thousands of hectares.”
