Macron Supports Greenland Amid Trump's Special Envoy Appointment
French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for Greenland and Denmark following the appointment of a special envoy by the United States regarding the island. “In Nuuk, I reiterated France’s unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland. Greenland belongs to its people. Denmark acts as its guarantor. I join Europeans in expressing our full solidarity,” Macron stated on his page on the X social network.
It should be noted that U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy for Greenland. Subsequently, the governor confirmed the United States' intention to make the island part of its territory. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized on Monday that he is extremely outraged by the statements made by the new U.S. special envoy, and that he will summon the U.S. ambassador in Copenhagen to demand explanations.
The Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, issued a joint statement warning the U.S. against attempts to seize the island, noting that they expect respect for their shared territorial integrity.
