American Submarine Arrives on South Korea's Shores: Yonhap

The USS Greeneville, a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine of the U.S. Navy, arrived at the Busan naval base on South Korea's coast on Tuesday for resupply and crew rest. This information was reported by the Yonhap agency, citing South Korean military sources.

According to the South Korean Navy, the USS Greeneville, which weighs 6,300 tons, entered Busan's naval base port on December 23 for resupply and crew relaxation. The submarine is 110 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a crew of 110 personnel. The USS Greeneville is equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, 12 vertical launch systems, as well as torpedoes and four torpedo tubes.

Yonhap further reported that the South Korean Navy plans to conduct an exchange of experience with U.S. military personnel during the American submarine's stay at the base, which will help to “further strengthen joint combat readiness.” Additionally, the USS Greeneville is the first U.S. nuclear submarine to visit the Korean Peninsula's shores during the presidency of Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office in June. Before this visit, the submarine had made three previous trips to South Korea, the last being in 2016.

The agency emphasized that it had been ten months since the last U.S. nuclear submarine entered a South Korean port; in February of this year, the USS Alexandria, also of the Los Angeles class, arrived at the Busan naval base for resupply and crew rest.
