Preparatory Works Have Begun at the Turkish 'Alican' Checkpoint on the Border with Armenia
As part of the ongoing normalization process between Turkey and Armenia, efforts to open border checkpoints have accelerated. In this context, technical studies and preparatory measures have begun at one of the key transitional points between the two countries, the Alican border checkpoint, according to Ermenihaber, referencing Turkish outlet Yesiligdir.
The publication states that the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia following the 44-day war has contributed to the regional normalization process, with one practical step being last week's delivery of fuel from Azerbaijan to Armenia as the first commercial initiative.
In light of the progress in diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia, the work being carried out at the Alican checkpoint aims to initially open the checkpoint for cargo transport via the Margara Bridge, and later for passenger transport as well.
It is noted that the project includes additional construction of the Alican road to connect with the intersection in the Karakoyunlu district and the 'Zangezur Road', which will improve connectivity towards Igdir and enhance regional trade and logistics capabilities.
For this purpose, local studies have been conducted at the Alican checkpoint by Igdir Governor Erjan Turan, head of the Migration Service Hussein Kyokru, Major General Ahmet Hamdi Atac, acting director of logistics at the Turkish Ministry of Defense, and representatives from various government agencies. Issues regarding the improvement of technical infrastructure, enhancement of existing standards, and strengthening of logistical capabilities have been discussed in the border area.
