The Longest Night and the Shortest Day on December 21

Tomorrow, on December 21 at 19:03 Yerevan time, the Sun will pass at its lowest point in the sky, marking the beginning of astronomical winter, which will last until the spring equinox (approximately March 20, 2026). This was stated by Levon Azizyan, the director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, on his Facebook page.

“This day is known as the winter solstice, and tomorrow, the longest night and the shortest day will be observed in the northern hemisphere. In Yerevan, sunrise will occur at 08:20, and sunset will be at 17:39, with the duration of daylight lasting just 9 hours and 19 minutes. After that, the Sun will gradually traverse a higher path in the sky every day, which will allow the duration of daylight to gradually begin to increase, adding 3 minutes by the end of the year in Yerevan,” he wrote.
