Protesters Burn Buildings in Bangladesh Following Young Leader's Murder
The police and paramilitary forces have increased patrol services in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, after protests turned violent last night, targeting media offices, political buildings, and cultural institutions. Although the streets were mostly calm this morning, residents noted that tension remains high, particularly ahead of prayers today.
The unrest occurred following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a 32-year-old spokesman for the 'Inquilab Mancha' or 'Revolution Platform', who had planned to participate in the upcoming elections. Masked assailants shot Hadi in the head in Dhaka as he began his campaign.
He was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Singapore for further treatment, where he died six days later while connected to life support machines.
Hadi was a leading figure in last year's uprising led by students, which forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee the country.
