Illegal Constructions Near Lake Sevan to Be Demolished by Year-End

The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia, Anna Vardapetyan, met with the listeners of the School of Democracy and Security on December 18. This was reported by the Public Relations Department of the Prosecutor's Office.

Presenting the Prosecutor's Office's efforts to return state property unlawfully transferred or leased in the coastal areas of Lake Sevan, Anna Vardapetyan emphasized that during the year 2025, five petitions have been submitted to the Ministry of Environment and the «Sevan» National Park State Non-Commercial Organization from the State Interests Protection Department of the Prosecutor General's Office and the Gegharkunik Regional Prosecutor’s Office. In addition to the petitions, reports of crimes have been sent to investigative bodies as a result of the conducted studies, and criminal proceedings have been initiated.

“Furthermore, based on the findings from the study conducted within the framework of the authority to initiate lawsuits for the protection of state interests at the Gegharkunik Regional Prosecutor's Office, a petition has been sent to the Sevan community and the «Sevan» National Park SNCO to dismantle illegal constructions on 34 land plots in the coastal areas of Lake Sevan that are below the absolute level and to restore the land to its original state. Currently, demolition work is underway, and by the end of the year, it is planned to dismantle illegally constructed buildings on approximately ten parcels belonging to various individuals located in the areas below the absolute level of Lake Sevan,” stated Anna Vardapetyan, who also reminded that administrative proceedings have been initiated based on the petitions, and 23 demolition orders have been issued.

The Prosecutor General emphasized that the demolition work is being documented, and information regarding the work done by the end of this year will be presented to the public by the Prosecutor's Office.

Speaking about the work carried out in the field of state interests protection, Anna Vardapetyan noted that since January 1, 2025, within the framework of exclusive authority to initiate lawsuits for the protection of state (community) interests, as well as as a result of prosecutorial interventions, property equivalent to 174 million 545 thousand US dollars or 66 billion 250 million Armenian drams has been returned to the state or community, including three kindergartens, a culture house, a sports field, a natural monument, parks, land plots, and monetary funds.
