Nuvarashen Penitentiary Conditions Do Not Meet International Standards, Ombudsman

The Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan conducted a tour of the Justice Ministry's 'Nuvarashen' penitentiary to examine the conditions of detention for individuals deprived of their freedom. The Defender visited various cells, engaged in conversations with detainees, and listened to their raised concerns and issues.

Under the direction of the Human Rights Defender, representatives of the Ombudsman also held private conversations with the detainees and documented their issues. Anahit Manasyan reiterated that the building conditions of the 'Nuvarashen' penitentiary do not comply with the internationally recognized standards in the field, and there is a pressing need for a new building to accommodate the correctional facility.

Although the state is already conducting discussions on this matter, the Defender emphasized that the issue needs to be resolved promptly. This is crucial not only for guaranteeing a range of rights for individuals deprived of their freedom but also for ensuring proper working conditions for correctional staff.
