Ukraine Imposes Sanctions Against Russian 'Shadow Fleet'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the implementation of the largest package of sanctions against Russia's 'shadow fleet'. The restrictions will apply to 656 ships flying flags from over 50 countries.

Zelensky made the announcement today on his X social media account. According to him, the mentioned vessels represent a significant part of the Russian fleet, which is transporting oil and other energy resources, thereby facilitating the continuation of the war.

The Ukrainian leader referred to the imposed restrictions as the most extensive sanctions package to date, targeting tankers and other ships serving aggression. Zelensky clarified that the ships subject to Kyiv's restrictions not only fly the Russian flag but also the flags of more than 50 other nations. "Most often, these are from Gambia, Sierra Leone, Panama, and Cameroon. Ukraine will share all relevant information with these countries and work with them to suspend the issuance of licenses," the statement on the Ukrainian president's website reads.
