Von der Leyen States Trump Should Not Interfere in Democracy in the EU

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the U.S. President should not interfere in the democratic processes of EU countries. “When it comes to elections, as to who will lead the country, it should not be us who decides, but the people of the country. That is the sovereignty of the voters, and it must be protected. No one should interfere, period,” von der Leyen said in an interview with Politico while responding to criticisms directed at the EU in the updated U.S. National Security Strategy.

The EU leader also noted that she has always had “very good working relations” with U.S. presidents, which continue to this day. Earlier, Trump had criticized Europe. Overall, as he mentioned in the Politico interview, he likes the “current composition” of leading political figures in European countries. However, in the U.S. President's opinion, they are “doing a bad job.” He indicated that he will support those European political figures he considers more suitable in the future. In the interview, Trump also re-criticized the immigration policy of European countries, which, according to him, will turn many of those countries into “unviable states.”
