Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Arrested in Iran
Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nargis Mohammadi has been arrested in Iran during a memorial ceremony that turned into a protest. This has been confirmed by her relatives and support committee. The activist, who has been imprisoned multiple times in Iran, is under conditional release for health reasons.
Nargis Mohammadi's foundation has received credible information stating that she has been "brutally arrested." French lawyer confirmed her client’s arrest to AFP. Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in Paris, also confirmed the news, stating that Mohammadi was arrested in the eastern city of Mashhad alongside another well-known activist, Sepideh Qoliyan.
According to reports, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was abducted during a memorial ceremony for human rights defender Khorshid Ali-Kordi, who was found dead last week. Ali-Kordi was known for defending those arrested during the mass protests in 2022.
The 53-year-old Nargis Mohammadi, a repeatedly sentenced veteran of imprisonment, received the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for the promotion of human rights and freedoms for all. She was released conditionally ahead of schedule in December 2024 for medical reasons.
