Modi Has Phone Conversation with Trump

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, had a meaningful phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. The Indian Prime Minister announced this on the X social media platform.

“I had a very warm and insightful conversation with Trump. We reviewed the progress of our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments,” Modi wrote.

According to Hindustan Times, Modi and Trump exchanged ideas about expanding cooperation between the countries in areas such as trade, energy, defense, security, and 'critical technologies.'

In August 2025, the U.S. doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, citing a desire to 'punish' the country for supporting the Russian economy through purchases of Russian oil.

In October, Trump stated that India would continue to pay 'significant' tariffs unless it stopped buying Russian oil. The American leader mentioned that he spoke with Modi, who told him that 'he has no intention of engaging in Russian oil.'

However, in early November, the American leader announced that India had 'largely halted' purchases of Russian oil. Against this backdrop, he promised that the U.S. would 'reduce tariffs at some point.'
