Undeniable Legal Fact: Samvel Karapetyan is Subjected to the Most Intense Political Persecution, Vardevanyan

Human Rights Day and the actual state of human rights in Armenia: The adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code, the provision of new preventive measures on such a scale, yet in all publicly resonant cases, only the application of detention.

This was stated by lawyer Aram Vardevanyan.

“These public data clearly indicate that detention in Armenia is not a preventive measure. Detention does not relate to restraining risks of proper behavior of individuals, but is solely a repressive, authoritarian tool. National benefactor Samvel Karapetyan has been unlawfully detained since June 18, 2025. Our appeals are under review in a written procedure by Judge Zh. Meliksetyan of the Court of Appeals, and today marks the deadline for submitting written positions, while the Court is expected to issue a judicial act on December 11. During this period, a number of additional written explanations and positions have been presented to the Court of Appeals, which refute any legal grounds for maintaining the detention.

From a legal standpoint, it is an undeniable fact that Samvel Karapetyan is subjected to the most intense political persecution, unlawfully detained for about six months, and during this entire period, deprived of even the minimum guarantees of a fair trial. The factual non-legal grounds for this are reflected in the realm of Facebook justice in the notes of the head of the executive branch dated June 17, 2025,” Vardevanyan wrote.
