Public Universities in Georgia to No Longer Accept Foreign Students
Public universities in Georgia will not accept international students starting from the next academic year, while private universities will continue to operate in their current format. This announcement was made by Minister of Education Givi Mikanadze in an interview with Rustavi 2.
Mikanadze noted that in some public universities, the number of foreign students currently accounts for almost half of the total student population. For example, at Tbilisi State Medical University, 45% of the students are foreign nationals while 55% are from Georgia.
In 2024-2025, the total number of students in Georgian universities reached a record high of 187,800, primarily due to the increase in international students. This represents a 21% increase compared to the previous year, with 37,100 students. Among them, 85% studied at private institutions, mostly in medical and master’s programs.
