China Accumulates Naval Forces in East Asian Waters
China is deploying a significant number of naval and coastal defense vessels in East Asian waters, at one point amassing more than 100 ships, which marks the largest show of force at sea to date. This was reported by Reuters.
China is in a traditionally active season for military exercises, although the People's Liberation Army has yet to make any announcements regarding large-scale, officially designated drills.
However, the increase in activity comes at a time when China and Japan are in a diplomatic crisis, following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's announcement last month that a hypothetical Chinese attack on democratic Taiwan could provoke a military response from Tokyo.
Beijing was also angered by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's recent statement regarding an additional $40 billion in defense spending aimed at countering Chinese actions, as the island considers it its own territory.
Chinese vessels have been concentrated in the southern Yellow Sea extending to the East China Sea and the disputed South China Sea, as well as in waters stretching into the Pacific Ocean, according to four security officials in the region.
