We Are Working on the Armenia-Turkey Electricity Grid: Marta Kos to Armenian Journalists

The European Union will invest €500 million to strengthen Armenia's energy security and diversification.

According to a report by Armenpress, this was stated by Marta Kos, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Policy, during a meeting with a group of Armenian journalists in Brussels.

Days ago, a document was signed in the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, under which Armenia will receive support within the framework of the "Caucasus Electricity Transmission Network" project to improve energy infrastructure, bolster energy security and diversification, and reduce dependence on external actors. The EU is cooperating on this matter with the German KfW bank.

"In Tashkent, we signed a document concerning a project worth €500 million. This is an investment to connect your (referring to Armenia) electricity grid with the Georgian grid, and we are already working on the Armenia-Turkey electricity grid. Why? So that you become less and less dependent on energy supplies from Russia. And this, you know, also comes from our experience. We now have specific energy programs for Moldova, Ukraine, and also for ourselves. For example, when the war began in 2022 (referring to the Russo-Ukrainian war), Europe was importing 60% of its gas, 50% of its coal, and I believe 40% of its oil from Russia. Now coal is at 0, oil is at 0, while in the case of gas, we are gradually going down to 0, which is not always easy, as you know too," Kos elaborated.

It should be noted that the goal of the "Caucasus Electricity Transmission Network" project is to ensure reliable, flexible, and mutually beneficial cross-border energy exchanges in the South Caucasus by synchronizing the electricity grids of Armenia and Georgia.
