Armenia Placed in Energy Dependency to Turkey, Marukyan Says

“We know well that we are an electricity-producing and self-sufficient country, but let’s see what they tell us.” This was stated by Edmon Marukyan, leader of the Bright Armenia Party, on Telegram.

“In Tashkent, we signed a document regarding a project worth 500 million euros. This is a 500 million euro investment to connect your (referring to Armenia) electricity grid to the Georgian grid, and we are already working on the Armenia-Turkey electricity grid. Why? So that you will be less and less dependent on the energy received from Russia,” said Marta Kos, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, during a meeting with a group of Armenian journalists in Brussels.

“It is well known that Russia does not supply us with electricity. Armenia receives its essential electricity mainly from the nuclear power plant, as well as from hydroelectric and thermal power plants. However, they want to place us in energy dependency on Turkey at all costs, and then force us to shut down the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, which we have discussed many times. If you truly want to help, then support the construction of a second nuclear power plant in our country. This is a crime against the Armenian statehood, our sovereignty, and our people, and those who support this process are placing Armenia in energy dependency to Turkey,” Marukyan wrote.
